A pattern designed based on the Maori tribe of New Zealand. Bird feathers were commonly employed to create traditional garments worn during the 'kapa haka' or cultural dance of the Maori people. Black, white, red and yellow were colors most often utilized in this art form.

A pattern created from repeated drawings of 4 classic guitars: the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster, and the Gibson Les Paul and SG.

Signs, Symbols

I used the circle and the sphere because it is one of the most pure geometric symbols, with profound meaning across many cultures. In general it symbolizes completion, unity, wholeness, perfection and infinity. It is also commonly used to represent the sun and planets, and the circle of life.

Pattern Design

This pattern was inspired by the book the Electric Acid Kool Aid Test, and the bright colors employed in psychedelic art. In order to set it apart I used more basic geometric shapes like lines and circles, and simple bold colors rather than the entire spectrum blended together.

The second pattern is meant to draw the eye to the individual skull designs, whereas the first is meant to be seen as more of the whole, without a true focal point.

I sketched a design with markers and scanned it into Illustrator. After using live trace, I made a larger pattern using mirror images. I added layers to the design by using large paintbrush strokes of different colors and opacities.

Pattern Project

I started my pattern by first using paintbrushes in Illustrator to draw the cupcake itself, from the decorative icing to the cupcake wrapper. Then, I laid it on top of three circles in pastel colors. That entire image became my icon, which I simply repeated in a grid large enough to see the details of the cupcake, but not overwhelmingly so.
